Overview: There is a rising scam of "pay-to-play" schemes (led by industry gatekeepers—promoters, bookers, touring acts). Reportedly it's present in all forms of music, but most common in rap. In the article's example, an artist paid $1000 and never even got to perform. The main factors in this are saturation of artists & scarcity of performance places. It's comparable to the practice of making artists responsible for selling the tickets - and footing the bill for unfilled seats.

I read this and the more I got into it, the more it wasn't what I was expecting. I was hesitant that industry gatekeepers were the ones scamming. Then it clicked. These people do have power and a position to exploit, but at the same time it could hurt their reputation. Isn't it more likely it is people not affiliated pretending to be or people real low on the totem pole with nothing to lose?

Reminds me of the real estate industry almost.
