~music Listening Club 9 - The Man Machine

Sup yall, we're here in week 9! It's time for another classic record discussion: Kraftwerk's The Man Machine! (or Die Mensch-Maschine)

Here's the place to discuss your thoughts on the record, your history with it or the artist, and basically talk about whatever you want to that goes along with The Man Machine. Remember that this is intended to be a slow moving thing, feel free to take your time and comment at any point in the week!

If you'd like to stream or buy the album, it can be found on most platforms here.

Don't forget to nominate and vote for next week's obscure record in response to this comment! Feel free to do something fun, dumb, or special in celebration of our tenth week!

This week is a special case, so nominate any record, feel free to have an unusual theme or otherwise go for something odd.

Please make sure your record includes a freely available stream or download. Probably your best bet is asking yourself "is this on Spotify or YouTube?" Other platforms work too, but I doubt too many winning nominations would be DatPiff exclusives.

Alien Kids - Alien Rap: Songs About Life on the Planet Glumph

Truly the Illmatic of children's hip hop. Missing out on this masterpiece would be a huge mistake. To copy user Sisterray777's review on RateYourMusic:

This is the logical conclusion to Suicides 1977 debut. Filled with scathing political commentary, sweet synthesized melodies, tight sequenced rhythms, and the inclusion of traditional Glumphian recipes.

"Way up to an Alien Cloud / Where there is no pollution allowed".
Clearly they were too ahead of the time. I wish I was an Alien Kid from planet Glumph.

Odd or obscure records, huh? In that case I'd like to nominate Boy Hits Car's Self Titled album. It's an early 2000's Nu-metal album that incorporates some eastern music styles (predominantly Indian), with a very talented vocalist and some kickass instrumentals.

FYI, Madvillainy has a good chance of showing up in the not too distant future anyway in a classic week. :)

I'm still not sure how to put my feelings on The Man Machine together, so I won't really try, it's wrapped up in too many events in my life to really unravel it all right now. Outside of those feelings, though, it's still a really excellent album. I've never found another electronic album so fun to sing along to and know every second of.

I dunno, I understand when people say this album is all dreary mechanical modernity, but it has so much life in the face of that and it's just so beautiful. There's a reason why these songs translate so well to other styles of music, and I feel like the songwriting here is leaps and bounds more interesting than most other electronic music, certainly for its time but imo even 'till now.

Getting lost in "Neon Lights" is such a wonderful feeling, I think I'm going to do it again.

I first listened to this album when I was first trying to get myself into music and I didn't really find it that impressive. I tried it again at some point in the future and I found that I had grown to kind of like it in a few small ways, but I still didn't really think it was really great. That's mostly the opinion I still hold on it now. I think there's a few really interesting moments like at some points in Neon Lights and Spacelab, but it just doesn't really catch me in any way beyond making me go "oh cool" for a few moments.
