Ok, straight talk ---- this is one of the most heartfelt and brutally sad albums to come out over the past couple of years, if not the entire span of time.

For those who don't know, Phil Elverum's wife passed away -- and Elverum kind of shut everything career-wise out during this time. This album is all about those first few days, for the most part.

Check out the entire album if you've got 43 minutes. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tPzkNS4rits

Real Death is the track which gets the attention, possibly because it is so gut-wrenchingly blunt (and also perhaps because it is the first song - I wonder how many people don't make it many songs into the album given how tough it is to listen to). However, for me, Forest Fire equals it in terms of emotional power and is at the same time one of the most beautiful songs Phil has ever done. Very few songs have the ability to make Elliott Smith sound upbeat, but this is one of them.
