Opinion Piece: Post Malone is the perfect pop star for this American moment. That’s not a compliment.

I'm against musical elitism, I think any and all music is valuable in it's place, it's the culture and drive behind it that we should judge it on. Pop rap is a genre that can have it's masterpieces just like any other (perhaps it already has them).

The trouble with Post Malone isn't the tired old reasoning we give to new musicians 'they make loud music that all sounds the same'. The trouble is the things he says and does. Trap 'bangers' are super popular, but it's a genre pioneered by black men. Post Malone is the white face willing to lift that sound and give it to a white audience. He's willing to take that sound and begin dissecting the hip hop within it, replacing it with a far more accessible 'sing-songy' flow that white audience's are known to connect to, discarding the decades of rapping and MC's that came before. He then believes he's the one being discriminated for being a white man in a black industry. What a louse.

Below people are calling him talentless, but I disagree - he's an absolute hook machine. His husky singing lends itself the to airy trap sound so well. So where did he come from? In interviews he props up some kind of sudo-'american dream' where he was just a kid with a guitar that made it big. Before 'White Iverson' he's a kid on Twitch plucking country music while his friends play Minecraft. Where's the gap? He just met a 'few' friends with thousands of dollars, a film crew, tattoo'd himself up and wrote a break-out single? He's the industry's love child - a fresh, young, texan man pumping out exactly the music that everyone wants to hear.

Ty Dolla Sign was doing it, Future was doing it: but we need a Post Malone to make it big.

But I did enjoy reading it, it's a good roast.

The overall sentiment that Post Malone generally lacks talent is pretty fair in my opinion. But the author definitely overblows some aspects. The most standout exaggeration is when the author praises Young Thig's Lifestyle, which is incredibly similar in lyrical depth and content to Malone's song Congrarulations. He's generic sounding pop-rap. Most of these criticisms could apply to any artist in the genre.

Post Malone is not a good artist, but I think he's just a clearer example of a lot of the garbage in the music industry than most.

My use of the word "garbage" is definitely unfair, but I certainly don't mean to imply it's a modern phenomenon. I think you're reading a lot more into my comment than I meant. To be more...

To be more specific, I think a lot of the music created (not just today but for a long time) is done mostly just to sell. There's nothing wrong with that and a lot of it I even really like, but it's mostly just forgettable and I would be surprised if Post Malone is anything different.

As a random side note I also like xxxtenatacion's music despite my hangups about him as a person.
