Read Music/Speak Spanish is probably one of the most important albums in my life. I found it freshman year of college right around the time of the Occupy movement stuff, which I was heavily invested in. Probably one of the best political albums ever written, in my opinion.)

I'm not sure if I had "grown up" when Payola dropped or what, but it did not feel the same to me at all. Especially songs like Anonymous just felt really out of touch, which was a really weird thing to feel about anything Connor Oberst had ever written. Not saying it was the worst album ever, but RM/SS was clearly a really tough album to follow up, especially so many years later.

Maybe it's just because you didn't find it at the right time?

Yeah I think it really was a timing thing. They had been playing those songs for a while before the actual album dropped, so I guess in the context, those songs were most likely more of a reflection of who they were earlier in the decade, I probably shouldn't be so hard on it!
