Pretty prolific week so early in 2019!
Had a chance to listen to Blake, Van Etten, Future and Deerhunter this weekend. I pretty much have the same opinion for all the releases - they all sound like the artists doing what they do well, but not doing anything special.
James Blake's 2016 'The Colour in Anything' was a huge grower for me three years ago, and has become an all-time favourite of mine. This new release is much easier to swallow, and is definitely riding on some trends of the moment. It's so much warmer than anything else he has done, but then I miss the iciness of his other records - there was always something to unravel whereas I feel I've heard everything I need to hear with this one. Who knows, maybe there's more to it that a few more listens will reveal.
The WIZRD is really just Future doing Future. It's getting old now, unfortunately. DS2 really refined the sound, but that was four years ago now. Probably won't go back to this one. Much preferred his attempt at pop-rap on Hndrxx
Sharon Van Etten got 'Best New Music' so probably worth going back to. Sounds like her most mature release so far, although nothing really grabbed me like I remember the songs on 'Are We There' doing. That could be a good thing, I'll definitely be listening more closely next time.
I've heard just about every Deerhunter album and I've not enjoyed any of them, so I won't pretend I have much to say about it.
Edit: Heh sorry about the typo in the title.
