My good friend Doug Turnbull at Ithaca College has been working on his latest project to get more people to support local music. This is a long time passion project of his, and I think this most recent iteration is really awesome.
Localify connects with your existing Spotify account and finds local and small-time artists playing near you that are similar to the artists you already love. Localify is free to use and will always be ad-free, as it's supported entirely by NSF research funding!
Doug and the JimiLab crew would love any feedback you have. This project is built entirely by a small team of undergrads in their free time, and I think it's fantastic so far, but they're all eager to learn more and make it even better.

I'm sure it has to do something with how Spotify is cataloging artists, but my results for a 15 mile radius include bands from pretty much everywhere including artists from the other side of the country. Otherwise, I like the design of the UI, it's very clean and easy to figure out. I'll try spreading this around my local music scene for those interested in this sort of thing!
That's awesome, thanks! From Doug: "we have a "local" flag for local artists and we are going to upweight these artists but we are still tweaking the algorithm."

Seems like a great idea - is it US only at the moment? It doesn't mention either way, but it didn't seem to accept UK cities (other than suggesting their American namesakes).

It is US-only for now. There are long-term plans to support non-US cities, for now we're stuck with US. Sorry about that! Edit: Apparently we have all of Canada, too!

It might be worth adding a small note to that effect under the city input box for clarity - I spent a few minutes wondering if I'd missed something obvious like a country dropdown somewhere!

Yea, I'm on Google Play Music. But...apparently it's being deprecated in favor of Youtube Music, which is currently completely garbage. I might just give up on music streaming at that point and...

Sadly, Localify isn't coming up with anything within a 50 mile radius of my locality, even though there are dozens of bands in the region, and there are already a couple in my playlists. Not to...

I believe this is just to allow it to maintain a weekly playlist for you to contextualize your recommended music with similar music you already listen to on Spotify

Okay, makes sense. It seems like a lot to ask up front, though? Maybe they could ask later after you've tried it out and want to set up that playlist on Spotify.

Noted! That's a great idea, thanks!
Looks cool. Too bad I don't have a Spotify account...

Another plus from me on alternative services. I’m using last.fm.
Cool, thanks for the feedback!
I personally almost exclusively listen to music on youtube through a combination of subscribing and a third party aggregator.
Sadly, Localify isn't coming up with anything within a 50 mile radius of my locality, even though there are dozens of bands in the region, and there are already a couple in my playlists.
Not to out myself too much, but for purposes of troubleshooting, a relevant sample of popular local bands can be found here: https://www.northernexpress.com/news/feature/turn-on-tune-in-rock-out/
I would try this, but it asks for too many permissions. In particular, it seems like permission to modify my Spotify account should be unnecessary?

That’s a good idea! I’ll pass along the feedback. If you do decide to give it a try, I’d love to hear what you think!
