Spotify experience isn't to my personal liking but RP has been fantastic in helping me discover many awesome songs and musicians. It is 100% listener supported, and commercial free. It has few stations, Main, Mellow, Rock and World. For audiophiles, there's an option for FLAC streaming as well.

Mobile app is bullshit free, and entire experience is breath of fresh air. In my country, Spotify arrived very recently and Pandora is still not present. Music caching for when internet does eventually go down, RP has much better caching.

Stuff like this, supplemented with bandcamp and ripping, hosted on my own media server should be able to suffice.

I also use Mixcloud a lot. There's a huge range of stuff, and many many archived radio programmes.

SoundCloud can be good, but you need to heavily curate your feed. They get very good at recommending stuff after using it for a while, and the weekly suggested playlists nearly always have something I haven't heard of before.

And I have whittled away hours on Radio Garden listening to random stations around the world.

Now I occasionally buy stuff on Bandcamp and donate to RP. Feels good to finally be able to support real people working towards creating something awesome. It is also optional, which makes me want to donate more, unlike spotify subscription that I cancelled the moment I realised I wasnt getting enough value out of it.
