So, like most of you, after dinner each night, the spouse and I pull out the ukulele and sing to our dog before playing with her. After the song, we grab a squeaky toy and throw something upbeat on the smart speaker and play tug with her as she tears the toy apart. This week that song has been YMCA by the Village People.

I was around when the song was played on the radio. And I remember my parents getting all dolled-up to go out disco dancing! A lot of music from that era sounded really dated to my ears for decades after. And frankly, there is a lot of terrible music from that era. But this song really holds up as a pop song. The horns are just incredibly bright and playful. The bass is manic, which I never noticed before. The lyrics are a beautifully campy wholesome but wink, wink not wholesome set of subversiveness. (I certainly had no idea what they were talking about when I first heard the song! But again I was pretty young.) All around, a good time I would not have expected from that song.

After listening to it, I tried to think of other songs that had worn themselves thin that I hadn't listened to in decades. My first thought was Celebration by Kool and the Gang. Sadly, it brought about the opposite effect. It was not as good as I remembered. That's not to say it's not a good pop song, but it's much more subdued than YMCA. Really, I think it was due to playing the more upbeat YMCA first that it felt that way. I guess it's like when you're eating ice cream and halfway through you take a swig of a Coca Cola, and when you get back to the ice cream, it doesn't even taste sweet anymore in comparison.

"Everything is Just a Mess" by The Brook & The Bluff has been one of my go to songs lately, along with Marian Hill's "Act One" album. I've been struggling lately between school, breaking up with my gf, and trying to find a new roommate so the music I've been listening to tends to reflect my mood.

The AI that composed the recent Rebecca Black re-release was apparently active as far back as 2017, where its data set of contemporary gay culture produced the Scissor Sisters x MNDR collab "SWERLK" (Bandcamp link), which is a combination of "swirl, twirl, twerk, swerve, and work" and also a bop.

Also on the queer pop scene is Sir Babygirl, whose 2019 "Heels" (Bandcamp link) is a biconic delight. She changed her hair, she changed her hair, she changed her hair!

Oh, and speaking of Rebecca Black, apparently a long lost NES cart was found with a chiptune version of "Friday" (Bandcamp link) on it. Wild to think that the song was available as early as 1986 but it didn't surface and bless wider society until 2011. The biggest sleeper hit of all time?
