I've had this beautiful folk album from Siv Jakobson called A Temporary Soothing playing a lot at night this week. I think there's a niche in folk music where it excels, but doesn't lose its grounding. By its nature, a lot of folk music won't be at the highest level of music that we expect. This album is really exceptional. The recording is crisp, the lyrics are engaging, and the melodies are like soothing lullabys.

Much the same for Billie Eilish's Happier than Ever (mentioned in a previous week). The album is just divine.

I've also been really enjoying "Oh My God" by Adele. I'm struggling to find another song that hits in the same way. If you have recommendations, let me know!

An assload of Christmas music. When I’m not catching the hourly headlines on NPR, I’m blasting Christmas tunes on SiriusXM.

I've been listening to some weird stuff lately. Greatest hits include, playlist to study like a medieval philosopher having the truth revealed by divine grace, playlist to study like darwin...

Sheldon Allan - Folk Songs for the 21st Century. When I was playing Fallout 4 his song "Crawl Out Through The Fallout" stood out because of his delivery and I wanted to see more about who did it. The album is a novelty album Allan made in 1960 as a sci-fi themed comedy album, and it's absolutely hilarious with an impressively powerful singing voice. I'm used to people crooning in similar music from the era, but Sheldon Allan's delivery here is almost a full shout the whole time, while still melodic and pleasant.

Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs (or, Pigs x7) - "King of Cowards" Spotify recommended them and the algorithm seemed to actually do right by me for once. They're an English doom metal band, and I've been digging what I've heard so far. I like their mix where they bump the vocals back in the mix akin to how ISIS mixes their stuff, but with vocals closer to the Melvins.
