I think the ethics of this are interesting but fair because it's sort of the perfect counter to Putin's political tactics. If you're going to employ massive amounts of hired thugs to kill dissenters then you open yourself up to people discovering your motives by going after those killers-for-hire. I think it's a brilliant play by Ukrainian intelligence and the reporter is extremely noble for agreeing to go along with the strategy. Not sure what more proof that this was a worthwhile endeavor allies are looking for.

I was just about to post this same story, but from RadioFreeEurope. When I first heard of this operation I was thinking that it was a giant PR mistake of the Ukraine officials to have used the global media to spread a false story.

The Russian invasion of Easter Europe is not covered enough in general. 10,000 people have died due to this. It’s a WWII style war in Europe. My concern was that western journalists would feel burned by the original murder story, and not cover stories from Ukrainian sources further.

They may have been, I guess we’ll see if this new revelation gets any press from major western news sources.

They did not use any global media. It was a journalist who was a Putin critic at that involved. Media picked up the story by themselves, and Ukrainians and supporters were in uproar anyway.
