This sentence from the article made me LOL: "Publishing experts believe this is a legal move to ensure songwriters are fairly paid from streaming." Ha ha! Good one!

Among popular streaming services, I’ve read Apple pays artists more than others. I don’t know if artists feel they are compensated fairly, but considering how successful the iTunes Store, and subsequently the iOS App Sore, have been, and Apple’s corporate culture, I’m not sure the cynical take is warranted. If I were to guess, this is a push from Apple in parallel to their moving into TV production. Since Apple owns the distribution channels for these media, it makes sense that they want to have exclusive content for their channels to attract customers.

Is this going move going to reopen the (previously settled) dispute with Apple Corps? I thought the truce was predicated on a clear separation of what the two companies do. I'm not really sure where that all left off though, I just remember Apple Corps complaining when the other Apple launched the iTunes Store, and this seems like even further encroachment to me.

I thought that they made peace when the Beatles music was put on iTunes Store, but I'm just making an assumption.

I think you're right, I just wonder if this could jeopardize that peace. I'm not sure exactly what sort of agreement they came to.
