Citigroup is suggesting (with decent evidence) that bond traders were busy watching the Mexico-Brazil game for the most recent US Treasury auction, causing demand to be soft, meaning the US Treasury has to pay a higher interest rate. They found the World Cup is more distracting for European traders, too.
