Damn. That's big news. Glad to see a government have some balls with these ISPs.

I can't stand Cuomo but I gotta give him credit on this one. He followed through.

This has been coming for a long time. NY invested a hell of a lot of money and granted many concessions to cable companies who promised to wire the entire state with high speed internet. Those companies have fucked around for 20 years with very poor results, failing to deliver on their promises - and also locking down internet access into a monopoly in many areas within the state. Honestly, I think the monopoly aspect is what's driving most of this animosity.

This is why NY is green-lighting fiber projects and any/all utility access necessary to get the fiber deployed. It's also why Google never bothered with their fiber offering in NY - they knew this was coming. Fiber deployments there are now moving at breakneck speeds. The backbone is already present along all major highways and interstates in NY. It was the access to infrastructure like poles that was the chief hurdle to smaller municipalities and last-mile deployment, and those hurdles are falling fast.

I came across another article related to this today.
