For anyone unfamiliar with the Alford plea:

a defendant in a criminal case does not admit to the criminal act and asserts innocence

the defendant admits that the evidence presented by the prosecution would be likely to persuade a judge or jury to find the defendant guilty beyond a reasonable doubt

It strikes me as extreme nepotism & corruption that someone with these sort of political connections could get away so easily. "I didn't do it, but I admit you could probably prove that I did."

Yeah, though the victim apparently said she took the plea deal just to move on with her life. Poor woman, this was probably dragged out to dissuade her despite the seemingly overwhelming evidence

I am not suggesting that nepotism does not exist, nor am I defending this individual, but hypothetically this does not necessarily imply guilt. Circumstantial evidence and the only other witness' testimony could be against someone who were innocent and, even if they thought they had a ninety percent chance of winning their case, they could take an Alford plea because the cost of losing is so high.

Ten years in prison is a huge gamble.
