So terribly disheartening. I wonder whether today's political climate is even conducive to real leadership. It's all so much about safe ratings, political capital and maintaining power. No risks....

Or, conversely, about tabloids, drama and sensationalism.

To be fair to Turnbull, his internal opponents aren't really giving him much choice. Every concession he's made on the NEG hasn't been enough for them - they kept threatening to cross the floor and vote against the bill. I get the feeling that some of these people would be happy to watch Rome the Coalition government burn as long as it means no NEG and no Turnbull.

I guess that's what I mean by a lack of leadership. No one wants to follow anyone. No one is inspiring people to go with them. Certainly not Turnbull. He's in a bind and the party has him, but...

He's in a bind and the party has him, but then they always kind of have, at least the Nationals did.

You're looking at it a little wrong. There's fantastic leadership - it simply goes against what you and I want. Leadership isn't always a march towards progress. Hitler was a fantastic leader,...

You're looking at it a little wrong. There's fantastic leadership - it simply goes against what you and I want. Leadership isn't always a march towards progress. Hitler was a fantastic leader, able to inspire people to do all sorts of things they wouldn't otherwise. Turnbull is a terrible leader, but there are those people like Murdoch who are far more skilled.

The real problem we face is power is not really in the hands of government, it's in the hands of corporations. Which is basically the same thing as an aristocracy.

A little off topic but I wonder if that tends to be exaggerated because people find it hard to believe that a country would become fascist easily. People think it takes some kind of genius, but really it just requires the right circumstances (a disenfranchised populace) and a manipulative leader who will play on the peoples' fears and resentments. We think democratic society is oh so hard to topple but history says otherwise.
