I'm certain this will go wonderfully.

"If you separate this from the politics and personality of any individual president then this is a great idea and an amazing use of technology to reach everybody if they’re in harms way," said Karen North, director of the Annenberg Digital Social Media program at the University of Southern California.

I agree that this might have been a decent idea under normal circumstances, but normality went out the window. If there is one good thing about Trump, is that ideally, he will be a benchmark for limiting executive power in the future.

      edit: spelling.

Yeah, there are way too many "separate this from the politics and personality" and "have remained professional and impartial over decades" and similar in that article. Relying on previous Presidential precedent for professional performance doesn't seem like such a solid idea these days.

    Oh, boy.

    I foresee three distinct possibilities.

    1. Trump immediately forgets that this system exists, and control of it is handed over to a responsible adult. The system is only used for its intended purpose. At least for the foreseeable future.
    2. Trump sees the potential of the system, realising that it does exactly what he's trying to do on Twitter, but a hundred times more effective. He stops using Twitter entirely, and starts sharing his early morning rants with the entire nation instead of just his cultists. No-one in the US gets a good night's sleep for at least two years.
    3. Someone competent in the administration sees the potential of the system, and starts using it strategically as a propaganda tool, inventing national threats whenever it's convenient for them to get a message out.

I was actually very politically active under both Bush and Obama. So far under Trump I avoid most of the national news on American politics involving him and have only actually had to hear him speak 2 or 3 times since he has taken office. I have never once read one of his tweets and never will, a president should not be using a website like Twitter in the manner he uses it.

His presidency has signalled a massive disconnect in my life with politics at the national level. For the most part I have only been focusing on local stuff and completely ignoring anything that does not directly involve my state (or is to big to ignore).

The majority of your outcomes would not be ok with me.

What I find interesting about this is that the first (few) times he uses this, he can get basically 100% of the country listening. If he frequently abuses it though, people will find ways to disable/block it. I'm really hoping it doesn't get to that point, or else things will get real awkward when he starts criticizing anyone who blocks him and it becomes obvious who has each time he sends out a message.

Looks like iOS already has a toggle for the existing government alerts (AMBER and Emergency). Hopefully there will be a separate toggle for presidential alerts, because disabling Emergency alerts in general probably isn't the best thing.

And with that it becomes another Amber alert system to ignore
