CityTV here in Toronto has done quite a few profiles lately on the people being ripped off by these CRA scams and they are seemingly always the most vulnerable among us... naive new immigrants, elderly people, those with mental disabilities, etc. It's really quite sad. :(

p.s. I definitely think the Canadian Government could probably be doing a lot more to deal with these scams, but this headline strikes me a bit disingenuous by implying the "Indian Police" would help if only they had assistance from the Canadian government, when the quoted official is (as far as I can tell) only the Police commissioner of Thane, a moderate sized city in India. Could they really not be bothered to talk to anyone in the Indian or Canadian government about this?

I honestly didn't find it disingenuous. My geography is really limited, but I read it as CBC tracked some of the calls to Thane ("Mumbai's seedier neighbourhoods"), so interviewing Indian Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh made sense to me. Of course, I would like to hear what the RCMP or Canadian government's side on this too. Hopefully an article such as this will push for more openness in the RCMP's investigation.

I really think the government's current stance on focusing (seemingly completely) on education is not enough.

"Indian police" to me implies more than just one local city's police branch, and the section of the article mentioning the quote is also incredibly ambiguous on the matter (so much so that I would even say its potentially intentional):

Canada isn't asking India for help

Indian police say they are ready to crack down on these operations, but need Canadian police to tell them about victims — and share details about the scammers.

That discussion isn't happening, according to Indian Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh.

"Nobody contacted us from Canada. It doesn't seem right," he told Marketplace in an interview.

They use "India" as a collective noun followed by "Indian Police" implying the same, and while him being an "Indian Police Commissioner" is technically true, it's been completely stripped of context. He isn't the Commissioner of a National police organization, he is just a Commissioner of one city, but nowhere does it say that in the article. I had to go hunting for that information on my own, which I only did because I was curious who the heck this guy was that CBC seemed to imply had authority to speak on behalf of "India" and the "Indian Police".

I 100% agree that the RCMP "awareness/education" stance seems like a massive cop out though.

p.s. I love the CBC but this sort of sloppy, borderline clickbait journalism really pisses me off. It's not your fault though, so please don't take my criticism of them as criticism of you or your having posted it... it's still a really important topic that definitely needs as much attention drawn to it as possible, IMO. I just wish the CBC did a better job of reporting on it, is all.

Yeah, I can see that. And especially because this is the CBC, I'm sure it was being a little manipulative on purpose. I don't think they're being sloppy though, I believe they're trying to push maybe the RCMP or the Canadian government to talk, which arguably is worst.

Edit to add: I kinda posted this because I'm still getting what I think is way too many CRA scam calls, and think the whole telling people to not give money is pretty victim blame-y, so this article caught my attention as something that the Canadian government could do more on. ...I also know I have a really high tolerance for clickbait titles, so it didn't read extra clickbaity to me, but with your added comment on "Indian police", I can see how it is.

For some reason, anything involving scams in Canada makes me feel like I'm living in a different country completely. The CRA doesn't investigate the rich people who hide their cash even when the Panama Papers are released and make it very obvious who's hiding their cash in offshore accounts. The CRA + RCMP and other law enforcement do absolutely nothing about these robocall scams. Elections Ontario doesn't investigate right-wing backed groups that use Facebook to push their party and should count as campaign funding/contributions. Not to mention the temporary foreign worker program which allowed big corps to exploit workers from other countries, and the bread price fixing by multiple grocery chains. And what about the billions of dollars laundered through real estate in Toronto and Vancouver?

It's like Canada has socialized healthcare and education but is also an anarcho-capitalist pro-business pro-1% haven. I don't get it, i really don't. Who the heck do I have to vote for, which lobbyists do I have to fund, to get some kind of action taken on any of these issues? Because it seems unless there are journalists covering these stories, nothing will happen?
