    The death toll will likely increase much more. I spent quite a bit of time after the 2004 tsunami to try and understand how it can possibly cause so much death I think many believe it's the height...

    I think many believe it's the height of the wave that's the problem but it;s not that alone. That height is caused by the sheer volume of water because the length of the wave can be over 100km. Not the width, the length from front to back. Out at sea the height above regular sea level may be a few meters but due to the depth of the water, the volume of water moving is phenomenal. As it approaches the shore and the seabed gets shallower all that deeper water rises up above normal and it just keeps coming and coming and coming until the full length of the wave has reached land. And there may be several waves, not just one.

    Just absolutely terrifying.

    Then seeing real time broadcast in Japan 2011 was also heartbreaking.

    That is a great URL. I hate it when I find an article that doesn't have the date anywhere. It's the most frustrating thing.
