His passport, camping gear, and cycling wear were also taken.
He's from the UK (doesn't specify where, but it appears to be southern Britain from their tiny map), so he's going to have a tough time getting out of Australia. I bet that his embassy (does the UK have separate embassies for Britain, Scotland, etc?) can ensure he can get back to the UK, but I have to wonder if they can issue him a new passport that would be needed to continue on to New Zealand and America in time.
No separate embassies for the home countries. We are all United Kingdom citizens, whether we like it or not. And travel documents shouldn't be too difficul to sort out. UK/Aus/NZ are reasonably...

And I'm pretty sure a passport can be issued abroad. My first UK passport was issued in South Africa. Might take a while though.
