We had his name, his manifesto, his sickening live-stream as immediate evidence and attribution.

I was watching the ABC 24-hour news channel on Saturday when they suddenly crossed to a live feed of the shooter's 3-minute appearance in court. He himself was blurred out, but we could hear his defence lawyer and the judge talking. One thing I thought was notable was when the judge said that the defendant had not applied to have his identity or identifying details suppressed. My first thought was that this guy wants people to know he did this. It just confirmed his thinking behind his media preparations.

I even wonder if he wanted to make himself a hero of the neo-nazi movement, by letting his brethren see what he did. He has, after all, achieved a type of infamy and notoriety, in the same way as other high-profile evil people.

I think it's pretty clear at this point that this is his goal, and that he is doing tons of tricks to game the media. I saw someone share a shot of him during the trial (uncensored unfortunately)...

I saw someone share a shot of him during the trial (uncensored unfortunately) flashing the "ok sign" that is used by right wingers to troll liberals. He is playing us. And sadly, people are falling for it incredibly easily.

His manifesto plays into both sides of the media spinning it in whatever narrative they want it to. The media isn't necessarily being tricked, as it is pretty obvious his intentions. He wishes to bring discourse and brought fuel for each side on the 'left and right' spectrum to do it.

I may be ignorant on the subject, but I believe he's simply just doing the circle game, where you make an OK sign below the waist. His actions included a lot of pop culture memes, that being one of them I suppose, common with teenagers. I don't think I've ever seen it be used for "right wingers," I think that might be stretching it a bit.

It's not the circle game. Trolls pretending to be right-wingers use this "OK" signal as a way to make liberals react, while actual right-wingers use this "OK" signal sincerely as a racist...

Is that an OK sign? A white power symbol? Or just a right-wing troll?

I'm a bit surprised that people still end up falling for this trick, which I guess goes to show how effective it is. Using the OK symbol as a dogwhistle has been occurring since the election. You should always be examining the context of the situation because not everyone that uses it is going to be some alt-right asshole naturally, but when you see people on the right using it in strange situations it should be triggering some alarm bells.

But the circle game shows the hand from the other side, at least here in Germany.

His goal, other than murdering people, is to sow division. That's what people are falling for. I'm seeing so many people who are on the same team, fighting with one another. It's seriously diminishing the strength of the movement to fight hatred and bigotry.

Beyond pressuring websites and server hosting companies (or their advertisers) to ban these types of communities, I'm not really sure what we can do. /r/the_donald has had many topics and comments that either tacitly or fully approve of the New Zealand shooting, and there are several communities on reddit documenting this (/r/TopMindsOfReddit, /r/AgainstHateSubreddits).
