This kind of thing really scares me personally. I surely have nothing to hide per se which could be taken against me but this feeling of potentially having my privacy violated just gives me a high-level of stress and unease.

It's been a fair factor in me not wanting to travel outside.

        You don't?

What I meant was that I wouldn't be in legal trouble if they were to search me, I'm a pretty clean person in that regard. There are things which I would prefer to hide from people for my own dignity but it's in no way life threatening.

That said, I do take quite a lot of measures to protect my privacy because I really do think it's important. As a sidenote : Please keep your political leaning outside of conversations which don't need it, not everything needs to be about that.

However, I did not say Trump was a fascist.

Yeah I just put them together because of laziness on my part, sorry for the miscommunication.

That was the implication of the statement.

I think I would agree that if someone were turned back because of their political beliefs it would be fascist. I'm curious to see those documented cases though, I've not heard of them.

Not that I support it, but it is worth noting that Marijuana is still illegal at the Federal level in the US, being a Schedule I controlled substance, and U.S. Customs and Border Protection is a Federal law enforcement agency. Not only that but I imagine US border agents, much like Canadian ones, have a significant amount of discretionary power when denying someone entry. So calling it fascism when a border agent chooses to deny someone entry for admitting to using a Federally illegal narcotic is a bit of a stretch, IMO. It's still dumb, but it's a far cry from fascism.

Arguing that you don't care about the right to privacy because you have nothing to hide is no different than saying you don't care about free speech because you have nothing to say.

I never argued that. I said that legally I had nothing to hide as in, I wouldn't get in trouble if police did it. Edit : Nice quote from Snowden btw ;)

That's actually a quote. Here is the full quote:

Arguing that you don't care about the right to privacy because you have nothing to hide is no different than saying you don't care about free speech because you have nothing to say. Nobody needs to justify why they 'need' a right. The burden of justification falls on the one seeking to infringe upon the right. You can't give away the rights of others because they're not useful to you. More simply, the majority cannot vote away the natural rights of the minority. -- Edward Snowden

I have been thinking about safe ways to fly. Obviously data encryption is not safe because you can be forced to hand over the password. One option would be to back up your phone, wipe it clean and restore the backup over the internet on the other side. One issue I see with this is usually when travelling you don't have access to a connection you can quickly grab a 32GB+ backup. Another alternative is taking a spare phone with you that has no personal data on it.

An issue I see with these options is the lack of anything personal on your devices may be seen as suspicious activity. Should you load it up with some worthless but legit data. Some random selfies and photos of the beach? Or do you come up with an excuse like "Its a work phone, I don't use it for personal use" and load it up with work contacts. Even that brings up the question of why your call logs are empty.

In the US at least you can't be forced to provide a password, but they can forcibly take a fingerprint from you. I'm sure they can deny you entry to the country on a whim, though.
