A friend was telling me about this incident yesterday, and I was instantly struck by the similarities to the British Airtours disaster [1]. That accident, in which the plane landed safely but instead of evacuating on the runway attempted to taxi, caused widespread changes to airline regulation. It will be interesting to see if similar changes are made in light of this disaster. This is not the first time in recent years we have seen passengers evacuate striken aircraft with their hand luggage, but for perhaps the first time (at least recently) this selfishness seems to have cost lives. That factor will surely be the subject of regulator scrutiny.

This disaster will be a big blow to the image of Russian aviation; the Superjet being the flagship of the nation's modern commercial aviation sector for the time being while the Irkut MC-21 remains in development. It will be interesting to see what has caused such a dramatic failure on a relatively modern jet.

Can you elaborate on this? the article doen't seem to mention anything about passengers leaving with their hand luggage.

Visible in the external evacuation videos here. Warning: if you don't want to hear the screams of terrified people who are imminently going to die, don't watch the in-cabin footage.

There's not a lot more that can be required of the airlines themselves though. Passengers are briefed on emergency evacuation procedures and have briefing cards readily available. The issue is the average person not taking it seriously enough. Cabin crew are perceived as mere waiters, instead of life-savers trained for survivable emergencies.

At the end of the day, the passengers are the weak link in any evacuation requirement. Every model is built around generally willing passengers. No Procedure can handle passengers actively flaunting the rules, except maybe for forceful removal.
