    Apologies to the people who are tired of U.S. news, but the nuts and bolts of our democracy problem are important.

    This is how we wound up with de facto minority (wealthy, white) rule, and it's instructive for nations going through their own authoritarian transitions. The more various minorities are fractionated and disenfranchised, the more difficult it is to create majoritarian pluralities or sustain governing coalitions that truly reflect majority rule.

    In the Milwaukee suburban county of Waukesha, a black person is a whopping thirteen times more likely to be arrested than a white person.

    I joke about some of the suburbs being super racist and things like this are why. Good lord.

    On a more substantial note, we have a sordid history of racism just like everywhere else. Redlining was a thing in both Milwaukee and Madison, and even in Madison where we pride ourselves on being progressive there's still so much work to do.
