If a CEO signs off on incorrect financial statements, they can be thrown in prison, but when innocent customers get prison time because the corporation fucks up, it's on the customers to go against an army of lawyers to get any compensation after they spend time in jail and money on a lawyer.

Corporations might be "people", but a person who did this would be in hot water for filing false police reports way before they caused 30 false arrests. Expungement takes time, and even when your background check turns up clean, news articles with "<X> arrested for stealing rental car" and your mugshot can make it extremely difficult to get a job. We need more accountability for corporations, either with jail time for CEOs or minimum penalties in the millions so shareholders will notice.

Morally, logically, and ethically they are not and I've never seen a convincing argument otherwise. Citizens United is a garbage piece of legislation that serves only to codify that they are legally, which is a farce unto itself because what is legal is also supposed to be moral, logical, and ethical.

You're making a lot of sense.

Tangentially related, does anyone know why the rental car business is so crappy? High prices, prices that almost never match what was announced online, long lines, slow processes... I've never...

Probably because you usually rent a car when on holiday where you don't have a load of time to shop around.

In: re high prices - business travelers are either price-insensitive or they have pre-negotiated rates.
In: re slow processes - "status" with the rental car agency leads to better turnaround time and more favorable decisions.
