self-regulation in general is possibly the funniest joke ever sold to people, because there are like two prominent examples of it working out (at least in the US), and both of them are entertainment-related (MPAA, ESRB) and even then are controversial because they're somewhat opaque in their practices due to their nature where government regulation might not be.

i've also made this comment with respect to internet privacy, but what cool of a state of affairs it is that one of the only ways to make people actually comply with even the most basic regulation on matters like this is threatening to lock them out of one of the largest economies in the world if they don't--and even then sometimes on less international matters, they just take the hit. kinda underscores how powerful a lot of companies are, and how little power consumers tend to have over a lot of them.
