A life sentence does seem appropriate for a remorseless and gleeful murderer.

They also said in court documents he was recorded on a jail phone call making disparaging remarks about Heyer’s mother as recently as last month.

Agreed, that detail erased any hint of mercy I might have felt towards him.

      In addition:

Under a plea deal, federal prosecutors agreed not to pursue the death penalty.

      He already received mercy.

Coverage of this case also tends to focus on Heather Heyer, sometimes at the expense of other protesters who were injured but not killed.

After sliding off Fields’ car, Bowie hit a truck parked nearby, breaking her pelvis in six places. Her femoral artery was severed, requiring emergency surgery. Her orbital bone near her right eye was fractured, as was her tailbone.

Jeanne Peterson, who entered the courtroom in a wheelchair then walked to the witness stand with the help of a cane and deputy, described how Fields ran over her.

Peterson said she has had five surgeries so far with a sixth set for next year.

Fields should consider himself lucky that he only killed one person. His action easily could have killed more, and if that had happened I suspect prosecutors would have been much less likely to take the death penalty off the table.
