The arrests come as senior White House officials are searching for new ways to limit the amount of federal aid going to help Puerto Rico, and the island’s allies fear the arrests will give Trump greater justification for curtailing additional aid to the island.

“The governor of Puerto Rico and his administration have now given President Trump the ammunition he needed,” said San Juan Mayor Yulin Cruz, a political opponent of the governor.

This is what worries me the most out of this. A few politicians and officials looking out for themselves decided to try and take advantage of this system. In doing so, they could cause significant damage to the people of Puerto Rico, who have already been through enough. They were put in the position of public trust and they abused their power. They should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

These people also just gifted Trump a huge talking point in his favor for how he failed the people of Puerto Rico in his response to the disaster. It took 11 months for power to get restored on the island. Now he can just blame these officials and claim he was not to blame. This is a huge disappointment on all counts.

Yeah, the optics are a shame. You're right that they'll be the scapegoat as nuance is no longer a thing when communicating in politics.
