As someone who actually lives in Hawaii, I have to admit that I'm not very fond of these protests. The TMT project is by no means unlawful, they followed every proper step and procedure, and they've already fulfilled some of their promises like their grants to local schools and university students even though they haven't been able to do anything with their telescope yet (on account of it not even being built yet). The protestors claim that their ancestors would oppose it, but King Kalakaua himself supported the idea of an observatory on Mauna Kea, and Native Hawaiians have a long history of scientific advancement and education that few people outside Hawaii realize, not to mention their substantial interest and specialty in astronomy and nocturnal navigation (seriously, it puts the Greeks to shame). I've heard it compared to the bone removals on Maui and Oahu in the past, but whereas those were unearthing burial sites for hotels and shopping malls (which didn't need to be in that one place), this is adding a harmless telescope, next to 12 that already exist, and will deliver substantial scientific and educational gains without doing any harm to the surrounding area, and only Mauna Kea has the height to offer a good telescope view while not also being volcanically active like Mauna Loa and Kilauea. I'm fully aware and I understand the long and painful history behind Hawaiian oppression, but it's frustrating to see a project with so much pomise and potential being attacked because of a knee jerk response. And I'm especially perturbed by how much the anti-TMT crowd gatekeeps using race and religion, tactics I already see waaaay too much of from the alt-right conservative crowd.

media coverage of this affair continues, which is surprising because normally protests like this don't get a lot of media attention. articles are now in Vox and The Nation explaining what's going on.
