    Jesus. This needs to be stopped, and outright reversed. Ideal copyright terms are an automatic 10 years, followed by subsequent 10-year renewal periods where 1) the holder pays a renewal fee...

    Jesus. This needs to be stopped, and outright reversed.

    Ideal copyright terms are an automatic 10 years, followed by subsequent 10-year renewal periods where 1) the holder pays a renewal fee directly related to the revenue stream from the copyrighted work (likely a tiny percentage), and 2) is required to produce new material related to that copyright before the next renewal. Failure to pay the fee or utilize the property will result in it entering the public domain. Multiple 10-year renewals are possible, but the costs increase every single time and eventually tap out at a hard cap somewhere (say 50 years). A system like this would go a long way towards combating the piracy problem too.

    I would have gone with "absolutely fucking bonkers" but Lessig is a hell of a lot more reserved and careful with his words than I am, being the world famous attorney that he is. ;)
