I realize this is probably just an optics exercise in ass covering, but could you dream up a more implausibly naive agreement?

Under the draft accord, thousands of U.S. troops would be withdrawn over the coming months in exchange for guarantees Afghanistan would not be used as a base for militant attacks on the United States and its allies.

What???? You don't think it's wise to trust the Taliban and whatever is left of the Afghan govt in this??? But when have they ever gone back on something they promised?

I wonder if this has more to do with President Khalilzad cancelling the other day, than the bombing. Afghan president postpones US trip to discuss Taliban deal—AP

Interesting. It's certainly possible that Trump is trying to save face, but his timeline of events makes more sense to me. We'll see how the next few days bring in more information about this.

This is a shame -- it is beyond time for the United States to leave this country. The Taliban has been as aggressive since the beginning of the peace talks. Countries that have the leverage during negotiations tend to do this, ramp up aggressive activities just before talks to strengthen their positions. It's unfortunate, but doesn't change the fact that the main U.S. objective should be troop withdrawal.
