        Even in 2004, there were a lot of shenanigans at the polls that prevented people from voting, especially in swing states like Ohio. That behavior going unpunished is a direct line to our situation...

        They haven't won the popular vote for the Presidency since 2004 (which had incumbent advantage)

        But two counterpoints to keep in mind. First, to whatever extent people's political affiliations do change, they generally get more conservative with age.

        Second, if Republicans get enough power now, they can rewrite the rules so that they stay in power, and demographics be damned.

      My thoughts exactly too, and that being the reasoning behind all these recent underhanded and desperate moves by Republicans at all levels of governance is pretty obvious IMO. The demographic data is pretty clear that they are already on borrowed time as the Silent+Boomer generation (the core of their support) continue to dwindle in numbers, and the Millenials and even younger generations (which skew heavily Democrat) begin to overtake them and exert their dominance by actually going out to vote.
