I think a few people outside Australia are not aware of the scale of the fires, and thus the problems that are caused. I found this thread useful to understand the scale:...

I found this thread useful to understand the scale: https://twitter.com/manwithoutatan/status/1212523804620152832?s=20

      From Bodie Ashton's Twitter thread:

The Australian Prime Minister, at the height of the crisis, went on holiday to Hawaii, which his office first denied and then insisted he was trying to get home, but it’s impossible to get flights from Honolulu to Sydney (???)

Scott Morrison returned to Australia on 21st December.

Also, while the entire country faced catastrophic fire warnings (so no barbecues, people!), the cities all had fireworks displays.

All cities concerned consulted with their local emergency services before proceeding. While the main capital cities' displays went ahead, many rural fireworks displays were cancelled.

Millions were spent on these. But not to pay the firefighters.

"Volunteer firefighters in New South Wales will be able to apply for up to $6,000 in compensation from the Federal Government, Prime Minister Scott Morrison has announced."

"Volunteer firefighters in South Australia will receive the same financial support as their NSW counterparts, the state government has confirmed."

"Volunteer firefighters who are also Federal Government employees will be given four weeks' paid leave in addition to existing entitlements to help contain the nation's bushfire catastrophe." "Mr Morrison hoped this announcement would set the standard for other employers, particularly large employers. 'We call on other large employers to follow our lead and we commend those who have already put in place more generous volunteer leave arrangements,' he said."

The average temperature across the entire country has been above 40C (105F). Australia is roughly the size of the contiguous United States. Imagine it being that temperature on average ANYWHERE in the country, from Denver to Boston, Seattle to New York.

      For context, Australia:

      a) Is lot closer to the equator than the USA. The Tropic of Cancer barely grazes the southernmost tip of Florida. The Tropic of Capricorn cuts about a third of the way through the Australian continent.

      b) Has a whopping big desert in the middle (which is where most of our heat comes from). They don't call it the "red centre" for nothing!

And it is HIS people who, learning that two people had been killed, quipped that it was okay because they “probably voted Green.”

Strictly speaking, the MP who said that belongs to a different political party than the Prime Minister. The government is a coalition of a few parties.

While this thread is good for some context, it's biassed and emotive, and trying to push an agenda. Scott Morrison has been an utter fucking failure during this crisis, but we still need to keep our eyes on the facts.

      From Sandy Dawson's Twitter thread:

While people are dying I don't want to hear about politics. I want to hear about help.

In a thread where she writes about the Occupy movement, about how "We actually don't need to be ruled, even though we're constantly propagandised to the contrary," ... she doesn't want to hear about politics. Are you fucking kidding me?
