This makes perfect sense now - modern batteries and electric motors aren't substantially heavier or bulkier than diesel engines plus fuel for a given range of operation.
I haven't done the research yet, but I'd expect that you could actually have greater cargo or passenger space from recovering the hull capacity previously used for fuel. These boats are a new design, so I'm not sure whether the 350 vs 256 passenger capacity reflects the same dimensions as the old ferries.
