Because being black means you can't be racist, obviously.

Bank spokesman Tom Wennerberg told the Detroit Free Press that the branch manager is African American and that Thomas' race was not a factor.

This seems like an excessively binary take on things? It's supporting evidence for why it might be less likely.

Could be. And could very well be that the bank truly did not discriminate against the man based on his race. But that defense does not sit well with me.

This is as bad as it sounds, there's no real defense for the bank. Existing while black in America is not easy. Some discussion on reddit

Central European here, I've never seen anyone write a check, cash a check or even mention a check. They're a thing I know explicitly only from American media. That includes my parents, who are well in their fifties now. Everything is done via online transfers: wages, rent, etc.

I've primarily used checks for paying rent. Bank transfers while not incredibly difficult, do require some non-trivial set up (e.g., exchanging bank account #s). Most of my landlords have used a check or a third party bank transfer service (e.g., the moral equivalent of Venmo).

Also, if you don't set up a direct deposit with your employer, they will mail you a check. I imagine that there's a decent range of employers that would only use checks (anything more official than cash only, but less official than a direct deposit).

But yeah, maybe checks are outdated. The entire financial system in the US is mired in regulation and ancient technology, you guys in Europe are way ahead of us w.r.t. card payments and app payments and bank transfers.
