"Mostly False" seems to be an incredibly generous interpretation for Biden. To say that the proposed cuts under Obama's Grand Bargain don't count because they didn't actually happen is like Trump...

"Mostly False" seems to be an incredibly generous interpretation for Biden. To say that the proposed cuts under Obama's Grand Bargain don't count because they didn't actually happen is like Trump saying he didn't actually commit a crime in withholding Ukraine aid because the aid ultimately flowed after he got caught.

I'd rate Sanders' statement as "Partly True" at worst.

Let's see... Sanders and the article says "40 years", Politifact starts at 1973. I welcome anyone to correct my math here, but I'm pretty sure 2020 minus 40 years is 1980... Their ruling...

    2. Their ruling purposefully leaves out all of the recent requests for cuts and includes new support only. Also tries to pull the schoolyard "but he said it too" as if that's a defense because Sanders has also stated that adjustments would be needed in 1996.

Let's keep score here shall we (only includes this article and the links therein, it gets much worse if we include the other article I added)?

    1973: Raise benefits

    1984: Cut

1995: Tie (supported an exemption, eventually voted without exemption)

1995: Cut (voted to freeze four times)

    1996: Cut

    2003: Stay

    2007: Cut

    2011: Cut

    2012: Stay

    2014: Cut

    2020: Raise

So that's 4 for stay/raise and 6 for cut. Hmm... I'm trying to see where it's "mostly false".

Here's another article that seems less biased in favor of the Cognitive Decline CandidateTM.

Yeah I posted that intercept article simultaneously with this one. Interesting to see the contrast in judgement between the two.

Tl;dr Biden isn't really all that sure, Given his old but very poor electorate from racism I personally would trust what he says now.

Sanders said that Biden advocated for Social Security cuts for 40 years. The record is much more nuanced than that. Over his decades in the Senate, Biden generally pushed to protect Social Security, but he also supported ideas that would reduce Social Security benefits over time.

The audio in the Sanders ad of Biden calling for a total freeze on government spending dates back 25 years. About 13 years ago, Biden said he was open to benefit reductions, and then a few months later, said increasing taxes was better than reducing benefits.

During the Obama administration, he was on board with a proposal that would have reduced benefits about four percentage points over four decades. That was in the context of a sweeping budget deal, and ultimately, it went nowhere. But also during those years, Biden was part of efforts to protect Social Security from automatic cuts under sequestration.

Biden’s current policy is to increase Social Security benefits.

The claim contains elements of truth, but leaves out important facts that would give a different impression. We rate it Mostly False.
