Considering China has always been North Korea's biggest ally and has vested interested in keeping North Korea authoritarian (they don't want South Korea's democratic western influences so close to their borders, it might bleed over), this isn't that surprising.

I can't say I wish Kim any good health, he is by all accounts a garbage human being, but as it is always with such fragile governing systems, as soon as the person at the top dies, the resulting power vacuum often results in a struggle and thus more suffering for the civilian population.

Is there any realistic scenario for how North Korean dictatorship might end? Somehow it feels like it's held together by how other countries don't want to deal with the change.

Problem is, we've seen enough how messy externally influenced powerswaps can be. The middle east is a prime example of this.

Kim has a wife and between 1-3 children. I assume that one of those (most likely the oldest son) will succeed him, barring any sudden power grabs by other parties, so Kim's death doesn't really open any possibilities.
