The Boy Scouts of America says it stands with the Black Lives Matter movement and will require all Eagle Scouts to earn a “diversity and inclusion merit badge.”

Starting July 1, the scouts will also begin requiring all workers to undergo “diversity and inclusion” training and start reviewing all “property names, events and insignia, in partnership with local councils, to build on and enhance the organization’s nearly 30-year ban on the use of the Confederate flag.”

“This is not a political issue,” the organization’s National Executive Committee said in a “Dear Scouting family” letter released Monday. “It is a human rights issue and one we all have a duty to address.”

Using the word “murders,” the Irving, Texas-based organization condemned the police killings of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor, Black people whose deaths set off rounds of protests across the country.

6 LA council members want social workers, not police, to respond to non-violent calls

6 LA council members want social workers, not police, to respond to non-violent calls

In a bid to “re-imagine” public safety amid nationwide protests against acts of police brutaliy, LA city leaders on Tuesday called for the removal of police involvement from the city’s response to certain non-violent crisis situations, such as mental health emergencies, neighbor disputes and incidents involving substance abuse.

Unarmed teams of medical professionals, homeless outreach workers and other trained social workers should be dispatched to such emergencies instead, according to a motion signed Tuesday by six Los Angeles City Council members.

Such a program could draw inspiration from a Eugene, Oregon model, called CAHOOTS, which deploys a team of crisis intervention workers to respond to such emergencies, which may also include family disputes. That program also performs welfare checks and transports people to social services.

I’ve Seen My Brother Die a Hundred Times. I’ve Seen My Sister Die a Hundred More.
After reading this piece, I was struck with thought, "where will we be six months from now," and by "we" I mean white people like myself. We'll have the option to fade away and go back to a pre-covid world. Will we care enough to stand if things don't change, and we have other things to do.

Seattle police chief wants East Precinct back and defends tear gas. She says she also wants change

She also said she believes tear gas is an effective crowd management tool.

“If the City Council takes it away, we're back to batons,” she said.

    GOOD.

If police want to attack "rioters", then make them come within arms' reach. Make them run the risk that they might look their targets in the eyes and see their humanity.

It's also way too easy for them to justify using teargas, but it's much harder for them to justify having to beat the shit out of people, especially when there is video evidence of them doing it...

It's also way too easy for them to justify using teargas, but it's much harder for them to justify having to beat the shit out of people, especially when there is video evidence of them doing it to peaceful protestors.
