Specials and critical runoffs are always the most fun races to watch because you get to see each side throw what they think are their "best pitches" from their top-tier strategists and consultants. For all the actual policy nightmares he's introduced, I'm somewhat of the mind that Trump's most damaging effect on politics is that he has sucked all of the oxygen out of the room for anything except being for or against Trump. Regardless of what happens, I feel like we'll be better off when we have to go back to discussing education policy again. It's hard to even read the situation re: how people will respond to discussing something other than Trump because for 5 years no one really had to, but I'm hopeful Dems will get at least one of those seats.
I think it's a choice between more or less gridlock. A bare majority will help, but it still makes it really hard to pass new laws. Any senator who might sign on gets a lot of power to stop any bill.
Hell, I'm not convinced a D majority will be able to get much done anyways.
They can pass Biden's cabinet and federal nominations at the very least. Do you really want the EPA chief to be someone that Mitch McConnell approves of?
Well sure, it will be helpful in the short term, but we need more numbers to get everyone to agree to legislation that will have any real lasting effects.
If the last four years have shown anything, they've shown how much simply controlling the heads of the bureaus really does make a difference. It won't necessarily fix anything post 2024, but it's a start.
I'm trying not to get my hopes up, but I'm starting to see screenshots and rumblings on Twitter of GOP voters getting pissed at their party over the handling of this transition (both the frivolous lawsuits and giving up too early.) I'm sure some of that is just bots and propaganda, but there's always a chance.
