perhaps it is because i'm not an american, but i found this video deeply and existentially disturbing. what a tragic, unnecessary death. what callous disregard for human life. how little everyone in the video seems to care for the dead man laying on the ground. no one seems even to attempt to render aid; instead they continue to argue about who's fault it is.
a child lost a father and a wife lost a husband. castle doctrine? truly, there is no hope for us.

Looks like a Ruger PC Carbine with the Glock well installed and an extended 33 round magazine.
Based on the "castle" laws in this state, after seeing the video, 98% chance it'll be deemed self defense. Was already a pretty good chance once Read approached Carruth when told to leave, practically guaranteed as soon as Read tried to grab the gun.
I think you'll be proven right, but isn't that fucked up? From what I can understand, the guy was there to collect his kid who he had custody of at that time. Other parent doesn't hand the child...

From what I can understand, the guy was there to collect his kid who he had custody of at that time. Other parent doesn't hand the child over right away and he gets heated. I understand the correct decision is unequivocally to walk away and let the authorities handle it but as a parent someone not letting you pick up your kid as you're legally entitled to and then asking you to leave at gunpoint feels an awful lot like goading to me.

No? Whether Chad Read was on the property to pick up a child or buy a BBQ grill or to ask Kyle Carruth if he's found Jesus, it makes no difference. He was there, clearly being intimidating to Christina Read and Kyle Carruth, and told to get off the property. He refused to do so. Kyle Carruth got a rifle, told Chad Read to leave again, he again refused to leave and then threatened to take Kyle Carruth's gun and use it on him, then he went for the gun and was shot.
Seems pretty cut and dry that it's not "fucked up". The reason Chad Read was there doesn't change sequence of events that led to his death.
Based on the article, or statements within it anyway, he was supposed to have custody at that time, but the child was not at this place. I don't buy the "conspiracy to murder Chad Read" twisting as it looks like the same thing I've seen hundreds of times in divorced families; adults willing to use their children to manipulate and harm each other.
As is typical, everyone involved here is at fault in some way. Chad Read for not letting authorities handle the custody issue and intimidating others. Christina Read for not giving custody as agreed/directed. Kyle Carruth for escalating it with a firearm. Jennifer Read for likely encouraging the confrontation.
Congratulations everyone, you all suck and now someone is dead.
Everyone might be 'at fault' in some way, but Kyle Carruth brought a weapon into things unnecessarily. Someone is dead precisely because of his actions which I don't think seem reasonable. That's...

That's the part to me that seems 'fucked up'. It's terrible someone can escalate things to being deadly and still be considered legally in the right.
I agree. You should never respond to a non-deadly threat with deadly force. I also hate the assumption that the natural state of an American is with a gun in their hand. To say that you're...
I agree. You should never respond to a non-deadly threat with deadly force. I also hate the assumption that the natural state of an American is with a gun in their hand. To say that you're justified in self defense because an assailant could have taken your gun and used it on you only makes sense if you absolutely should have had the gun in the first place. The 2nd amendment says you can carry a gun, not that you should.
Yes, it's completely fucked up. This was a disagreement wherein one party was not at risk, introduced risk by going inside to get a gun, and then murdered someone. The fact that the laws protect...

This was a disagreement wherein one party was not at risk, introduced risk by going inside to get a gun, and then murdered someone. The fact that the laws protect him doesn't make it okay; it makes the laws awful.
Gun culture killed this guy. He is not responsible for his own death; the only person responsible is the man who walked inside and brought a fucking gun to an argument. And people who think that this is okay are also part of the problem.
