    this just goes to show you how even with the fairly extensive monitoring of asteroids and meteors that currently exists around the world, we still don't catch anywhere close to everything that goes on. meteors of this size entering the atmosphere are pretty infrequent on the level of a human lifetime:

    Lindley Johnson, planetary defence officer at Nasa, told BBC News a fireball this big is only expected about two or three times every 100 years.

    but we still completely missed it until just a day or two ago in spite of that because it evaded our monitoring almost completely and happened in a place with essentially no population.
