Chris Herd taught me Mineralogy I a long long time ago. He is an exceedingly ebullient professor who's nerdery concerning minerals shone through in his class. He was also a regular 3 Chillies on the online "Is this Professor Hot?" Rating scale.

Even back in the day when he taught me he was a well established expert in Martian geology and a NASA scientist as well as a board member (I believe?) of the Smithsonian. For a school with a number of giants in the geological realm, his resume was particularly impressive for a young student.

I first met Andrew my first year in the geological program. He ran the Earth and Atmospheric Science faculties extensive museum collection of minerals, meteorites, drill cores and fossils and was a huge advocate for the collections. He gave us fresh faced geologist an extensive tour of all the collections. I later worked with Andrew during my Master's research where he gave me some undeserved help when I didn't know what I should have known while making use of his very valuable time at the electron microprobe. Andrew is and Edmonton native and is another luminary in a faculty full of them.

Even though I know my alma mater is one of the best geological faculties in the world it's incredible seeing them in the news. It's not often that rocks are exciting enough to make the front page of Reddit. Both Dr. Herd and Dr. Locock are incredibly passionate scientists and deserve more than anyone to be part of this historic find.

In the future Dr. Herd is part of the 2020 Perseverance Mission as a retrieved samples expert and will be taking part should the planned Mars Sample Return Mission go forward.
