Dramatic title. What the article says is that a mutation millions of years ago produced an 'incomplete' or 'broken' version of a gene that is still found in primates. Later in evolution this gene was 'fixed' or 'completed' which when expressed results in an explosion of neuron production during gestation. This gene seems unique to humans.

I did read a long time ago that a fair bit of our DNA is "junk" and this was interesting to see how that could evolve to something fit.

I don't think it's junk. I think our knowledge is so limited that we can't understand what it's purpose is and so we label it as junk in an effort to simplify things. This is common in science.

That's so true, and I'm guessing "junk" makes a better title too.

Yes it's a crime the way journalists use any obfuscation of the truth necessary to create a catch metaphorical title. Junk DNA coming from a garbage bin. Sure, let's reinforce those outdated memes.

"It sat around as a worthless copy for millions of years, and then sometime, we estimate between three and four million years ago, an ancestral child had another unusual event."

I'd love to read a book told from the perspective of this kid. "Why is everyone around me such an idiot?"

I was hoping they'd talk about Neanderthals a bit. They had bigger brains than us (likely a little bit smarter than us, but it's impossible to say for sure). I understand the current opinion is that their brains were structured differently than ours and it's thought they, e.g., didn't have the same knack for language we have. I wonder what their version of this gene looked like.

This made me laugh probably way harder than it should have

Super interesting article to me, despite the clickbaity title. I've never big into biology but genetics is fascinating, and it's so cool that we now know another turning point in human evolution....
