Now we just need to put some work in on the Alcubierre “Warp” Drive! Edit: related article, with awesome warp ship design based on input from NASA’s Eagleworks.

I love that NASA named the ship the IXS Enterprise, no other name should adorn our first interstellar ship. Also, I think for the most part there are plenty of theoretical FTL drives out there,...

Also, I think for the most part there are plenty of theoretical FTL drives out there, the problem that seems to join all of them is a power source. We cannot even begin testing on FTL until we have found a power source worthy of it.

Finding a source of power that potent and compact is tricky, yes, but I don't even think it's the real problem here. For Alcubierre drive in particular, the whole "negative energy density" thing really seems like a showstopper. For FTL drives in general, the fact that FTL implies backwards time travel has some... concerning implications.

Well the original power requirements have been brought down from that of the sun, to much more reasonable levels, like a good sized nuke power plant. The major problem is that they require exotic...

Edit: Derp, didn’t see Kraetos’ response. I really need to get out of the habit of repying right out of my notifications to avoid this issue.
