Google is doing science on their own, and with different priorities from the scientific community because they have the money. Their cost-benefit analysis is completely different from that of scientists, who have to work with the grants available. I look for more of this activity from the moneyed corporations. Or: What's the point of having a nearly trillion dollar company if you can't take over the world?

That's it, @DonQuixote. You and I are mortal enemies now. Sleep soundly on your million thread count sheets in your mansion-the-size-of-zimbabwe. Ride safely your diamond horses clad in golden vestments (you, not the horses, but also they are clad in gold). Know only that every passing moment I will spend yearning for, plotting, and agonizing over your inevitable demise at my hand.

Live true and live full, because neither of us will be living long.

Also just to be clear I'm fooling around. @DonQuixote is cool, I would never want to hurt them. Who else would defend us from the windmills?

Windmills are scary, but they make cold fusion irrelevant.

You would be worthy. See The Painter of Battles by Arturo Perez-Reverte.

I'm getting a bit of a Bell Labs vibe from this. If the big G can produce a fraction of the science that Bell Labs did throughout the 20th century it will be a very good thing for humanity. Not nearly enough scientists are given the freedom to take whatever path the results take them as funding almost always has specific goals attached these days. Hopefully goog is trying to carry that torch and this cold fusion research is a part of it.

To be alarmist: At what point do we just hand the keys of governance over to Google?

Once the cat's out of the bag on something that big, there's no way a single organisation (state or private) would be able to keep a monopoly on it. They'd have the advantage of a head start, and probably a staggering amount of patent licensing income once the inevitable litigation was settled, but they wouldn't have control.

Eh,its going to be just another project they abandon in a few years. No need to worry over it.
