Because change and rate of change, for the trillionth time, are different things.

For example, geological observations indicate that during the last 2,000 years, sea level change was small, with an average rate of only 0.0–0.2 mm per year.

Sea level, since BCE until about 1800, has been relatively stable. Contract this to current rates of sea level rise: 1.7-3.0mm per year, and accelerating. Forecasts predict anywhere from 0.5 metres to 1 metre or more of sea level rise by 2100. That's a drastic increase in water flowing into the oceans.

Couple that with the Atlantic Hurricane Season's storm surges and Florida doesn't stand a chance. Let alone Miami. The entire eastern seaboard of the continental U.S. will be inundated. It's the climatological difference between a wave and a tsunami.

Probably. Fear mongering is valid here precisely because we should be concerned about what we're going to see unfold. Why shouldn't we worry? People used to accuse climate scientists of fear...

So again, I ask you, what is your solution? Give up? Abandon the east coast?

            Probably.

neither the fear mongering, nor the defeatism accomplishes anything

Fear mongering is valid here precisely because we should be concerned about what we're going to see unfold. Why shouldn't we worry? People used to accuse climate scientists of fear mongering over the very idea of climate change. Humanity isn't an ever-improving, all-resilient force. We're little specks of water & carbon on a rock flying through space. We've fucked up the planet, now it's going to fuck with us.
