I'll also add my apologies to rest of the world that the U.S. still insists on having its own parochial blend of English system and SI units of measure. I guess it's part of our quaint charm. :P

I would love to see a study on the monetary losses and other major problems that have surfaced since the decision was made.

Hell, even something as mundane like hardware stores having to carry twice as much nearly identical hardware to accommodate the fact that imperial and metric are just barely different enough to be incompatible is a gigantic waste of manufacturing and distribution.

When I was younger I also would have loved to debate what a silly decision it was to not switch over to the metric system...To me, switching to something that is literally such a universal (and fundamentally important) standard like the metric system is a no-brainer, obvious thing - we should have done it years ago. But, nowadays I figure any such decision was not based on logical aspects. Call me cynical, but I'm sure this all boils down to someone (or a group of someones) in a business/company/enterprise who successfully lobbied with members of Congress to keep things as-is for as long as possible. (Sorry, didn't mean to be a downer.)

I think it's worse than that. I think it's people who fear what they don't understand. I've heard people claim that the metric system was a communist plot, for example. You can't argue with "logic" like that, and these types of people seem to actively avoid being educated on such topics.
