Forget face masks and rubber gloves. The best way to avoid the coronavirus is frequent hand washing, according to a medical adviser to the world’s airlines.

I work in patient safety/healthcare quality, and it's important to remember that it's not just your own hands that matter. In the (I hope unlikely) event that you end up in a hospital, insist that everyone who enters your room foam up and wash their hands. Everyone: doctors, nurses, family members, maintenance, cleaners. If someone pushes back, ask to see the hospital's patient safety officer. Not washing hands is in most places a reportable "near-miss" safety event.

And "washing" doesn't just mean "wave your hands under the water for two seconds." Here's the CDC guide .

I started washing my hands religiously last year (happy birthday song twice, every time I come home) and maybe it's coincidence but I didn't even have a slight cough since then, usually I get a minor cold in fall, even fever. It's a meaningless anecdote, ultimately, but it's motivating. I also try not to touch my face with unwashed hands, which I guess is the actual way those hand germs enter your body.
