I don’t know if I could ever decide if it’s good or bad that it was invented. The argument either way is littered with caveats. We’ve enjoyed an era of peace since the last world war, but is this...

Of course, it’s better that the United States could develop the bomb before the Reich, for example. There’s no way to put the genie back in the bottle though, that’s for damn sure.

Comparing those to hydrogen is like a firecracker to dynamite. My favorite nuclear test video is tsar bomba and it's more chilling when you realize they cut the maximum yield in half because there was no way for the pilot to escape the blast radius.

These bombs really drive home the pointlessness of war. When they go off, no one wins. MAD is a perfect acronym and we've talked ourselves into thinking it works. How much climate crisis does it take to get the nukes back in the air?

Hopefully we never find out. There are good paths out of this mess, but they are dwindling.

Me neither. I err on good mostly because I think WW3 would have been inevitable without them but the damage they already have made is pretty damning (and thanks to radiation, long-lasting.) And if WW3 did happen the US would nearly certainly win by industry and a US occupied, wartorn and likely spliced into several nations Russia would be a much better fit for democratization, even with neoliberal democracy's failures.
