I would note this is in the category of “random shit a single congressperson proposes that probably won’t get anywhere”, and not a law that is close to passing or taking effect.

Who knows these days? I thought the TikTok stuff was just political theater way back when. But yes, my immediate reaction was. "You wouldn't download an AI!"

God, how horrifically out of touch those ads were. It did more to normalize shoplifting for me than to ease up on piracy. I totally stole movies from stores in the 90s. Shoplift from Wholefoods...
yea same, I gave up after this US President Donald Trump described the Chinese app as a “wake-up call” for the American tech industry as if he totally isnt the reason there's been massive layoffs,...

US President Donald Trump described the Chinese app as a “wake-up call” for the American tech industry
as if he totally isnt the reason there's been massive layoffs, hiring freezes, etc in the tech industry for the past three years.
By doing that, you’re playing into the hands of Josh Hawley. That’s exactly why he proposed this law: to make headlines. So he can be all “wow I’m so hard on China see see”. I feel like there’s a...

I feel like there’s a heuristic where, if you think Josh Hawley would approve of what you’re doing (sharing articles about his stupid law), you shouldn’t do it.
I really wish that news articles would stop reporting on newly filed bills. Any member of congress can submit a bill for review. It doesn't mean it's going to be voted on. Earlier this week (or...
I really wish that news articles would stop reporting on newly filed bills. Any member of congress can submit a bill for review. It doesn't mean it's going to be voted on. Earlier this week (or last week? Time is a black hole right now), a congressman introduced a bill that got rid of OSHA. That was the entirety of the bill: OSHA is dissolved.
That doesn't mean we're in real danger of OSHA going away any time soon -- YET. At least wait until these bills are being debated on the floor to draw attention to them.
Otherwise, these are just publicity stunts, or, while Trump is President, ways for that specific congressperson to get on Trump's good graces and get whatever kickbacks might come their way.
"could" is doing a lot of work here, the bill has 0 chance of passing and is not seriously designed to be anything more than a stunt, so why let it attract attention?

Are we going to say Bernie Sanders’s new law is giving healthcare to everyone just because he proposed a bill that won’t pass in congress?
I think that the title of this should be changed to something that makes it clear that this is just a random bill a member of congress filed and not actually anywhere close to becoming the law?...

I almost wish this would pass because this would be such a cataclysmic U.S. self-own
Ah yes... just like TikTok we'll play whack-a-mole with these Chinese apps instead of instituting across the board legislation to apply to all apps equally. What a joke.

Shoplift from Wholefoods and Walmart kids.
Remember kids, if you see someone stealing food; no you didn't.

Totally agree, but I wanted to share before this gets traction and it's too late.

Well okay, thanks for commenting.
There's a certain irony that "communist" China is so good at this "free market capitalism" idea that the government has to step in, yeah?

The very definition of clickbait.

Agree but I will fail to tag our folks who do that because I cannot spell
I changed the title wording from “new law” to “proposed bill.”
If anyone feels further changes are needed, let me know.
I suppose that includes the source code on GitHub. What a mess.
